Oman is looking to enhance investment in its mining sector, moving from the initial exploration phase to developing projects. The industry is expected to contribute increased economic and industrial value, especially in copper and gold ores and strategic minerals. According to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Oman holds important resources including chromium, gypsum, limestone, manganese and silica.
North Al Batinah Copper Project Commencing Development Stage
The North Al Batinah Governorate copper project falls under the development context, based on previous exploration and promising preliminary results. The scheme brings together Minerals Development Oman (MDO) and an Astana International Financial Centre registered Kazakhstani company. According to MDO data, both sides entered the venture following an exploration programme that lasted for several years. Importantly, it featured geophysical and geochemical surveys across 17,000 square kilometres and exploratory drilling work. Results showed indications of expansive mineral extensions.
Total investments in Oman mining sector exceeded OMR 105 million (USD 272.61million) during 2025. This followed the signing of six new concession agreements, bringing total mining concession areas to 28 managed by 13 companies. Exports of copper concentrates amounted to 95,000 tonnes, while mining production reached 65 million tonnes. Importantly, sales reached approximately 60 million tonnes with a value of OMR 159 million (USD 412.79 million).
