Oman and Saudi Arabia are strengthening direct overland trade using a new logistics arrangement designed to speed up cargo movement. The Secure Green Corridor creates a faster, cheaper and resilient alternative to maritime routes while creating an efficient supply chain.
Secure Green Corridor Utilises 725 kilometre Empty Quarter Road
The Secure Green Corridor utilises the Empty Quarter road, a 725-kilometre highway officially opened to traffic in December 2021. Announced by Oman and Saudi Arabia in August 2026, it links Sohar Port to Saudi Arabia’s industrial hubs across the Rub’ al Khali. The strategic road provides Oman and Saudi with direct land connection, eliminating the need for bilateral road traffic to transit. The Secure Green Corridor provides a faster cargo route, increased shipment volumes and bilateral trade and improve cross-border supply-chain efficiency. The Kingdom`s section stretches 564 kilometres from the Batha-Haradh intersection to the Rub Al Khali border crossing and cost SAR 1.9 billion (USD 533 million).
Enhanced Ministry Cooperation Between Oman And Saudi Arabia
The initiative is being developed in coordination with Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services. In addition, customs authorities in both countries as well as Sohar Port and Freezone are supporting the scheme. Moreover, Sohar Port and Freezone noted the partnership would strengthen regional logistics connectivity and facilitate trade between Oman and Saudi. Sector analysts indicate that the direct Oman–Saudi overland route can cut transit time by about 14–18 hours. In addition, it will shorten travel distance by roughly 800 kilometres versus traditional multi-border land paths. That reduction feeds directly into lower fuel use, fewer border delays and more predictable delivery windows for regional supply chains.
Secure Green Corridor Scheme Aligns With Oman Vision 2040 Goals
Importantly, the Secure Green Corridor aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and Saudi Vision 2030 objectives to grow non-oil trade, build logistics hubs and deepen regional integration. Sector reports highlight early focus commodities including construction materials, fertilisers, agricultural products, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, machinery and project cargo.
