The Sultanate recently announced its Oman Cybersecurity Strategy for 2026-2030 which will strengthen protection of critical infrastructure and defend against cyber threats. It was prepared by the Cyber Defence Centre together with government/private sector entities and also supports digital economy growth.
Oman Cybersecurity Strategy Built Around Five Pillars
Oman Cybersecurity Strategy is built around five pillars – cybersecurity governance, cyber resilience, capacity building/awareness, cyber cooperation and cyber economy. It prioritises strengthening governance, improving cooperation between public and private sectors and updating legislation as cyber risks become increasingly complex. Further goals include raising national preparedness, strengthening institutions ability to respond to attacks and identifying investment opportunities in the sector. Moreover, the strategy seeks to build infrastructure which encourages a digital environment so businesses and government entities can innovate securely.
The Oman Cybersecurity Strategy will incorporate periodic reviews to measure progress and allow response to technological developments and emerging risks. Accordingly, it aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and is expected to contribute to economic diversification and improved government services. As a result, cybersecurity has become increasingly important as increased public services, businesses and critical infrastructure rely on interconnected digital systems.
Cyber Defence Centre Responsible For Oman`s Digital Infrastructure
The Cyber Defence Centre was established under Royal Decree No 64/2020 as the authority responsible for cyber defence in Oman. Its mandate includes protecting national digital interests, coordinating responses to threats and strengthening security of digital infrastructure and essential services. The centre is also responsible for preparing national cyber defence/security strategies, developing regulatory frameworks, policies/plans and implementing these in coordination with relevant authorities.
