Central Asian Infrastructure To Help Increase Trade

Central Asia and China are implementing huge infrastructure projects to improve trade as part of the Belt And Road Initiative. Demonstrating this, the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan high­way stretches hundreds of kilometres and connects Central Asia with China’s Xinji­ang Region. Moreover, expand­ing rail con­nectiv­ity has resulted in increased Kazakhstan and China freight traffic. Stronger con­nectiv­ity has led to expan­ded eco­nomic ties and significant future potential development. Figures demonstrate this as trade in goods between China and Kyrgyz­stan in 2025 reached USD 27.2 bil­lion, up 20% year-on-year. Last year both nations signed a joint state­ment to improve the China-Kyrgyzstan com­pre­hens­ive stra­tegic part­ner­ship and deepen infra­struc­ture cooper­a­tion. In addition, they are targeting alliances in new sectors including clean energy, green min­er­als and arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence.

Due to continued efforts, Central Asia`s shared vis­ion has been trans­lated into an expand­ing web of bilat­eral and regional cooper­a­tion. Improved con­nectiv­ity has laid a solid found­a­tion for closer ties. The Belt and Road initiative has witnessed cooper­a­tion doc­u­ments being signed encompassing 25 neigh­bour­ing states across Asia. Accordingly, a con­nectiv­ity net­work spanning six cor­ridors and six routes through mul­tiple coun­tries and ports is now largely in place.

Another huge driver of collaboration and cooperation in the Central Asia region is The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). It is a Eurasian political, economic and international security organisation of ten member states. It is the world’s largest regional organisation in terms of geographic scope and population, covering at least 24% of the world’s total area. At its most recent summit, three plat­forms for energy, green industry and the digital eco­nomy were announced. In addition, three cooper­a­tion centres for sci­entific and tech­no­lo­gical innov­a­tion, higher edu­ca­tion and voca­tional and tech­nical edu­ca­tion were also revealed. Open to all SCO coun­tries, these ini­ti­at­ives share oppor­tun­it­ies while fos­ter­ing sus­tain­able growth across the region.
