Saudi Arabia announced the launch of a driverless 3.6 kilometre monorail project in Riyadh before the end of this year. It will then be tested during early 2027 before becoming fully commissioned for public use later in the same year.
Monorail Will Support The 10 Minute City Concept
The monorail will carry 3,500 passengers per hour and supports the ’10-minute city’ concept, where every destination is within a 10-minute walk. In order to achieve this, suspended pedestrian bridges will be built to connect all buildings including the metro stations.
Saudi Railway Company Extends Northern Line To Zulfi
In associated news, Saudi Railway Company (SAR) signed an agreement to establish and operate a passenger train station in Zulfi governorate. The pioneering project will result in the seventh passenger station being added to the route on the Northern Railway line. Trains will depart from Riyadh towards Al-Qurayyat, passing through Al-Majma’a, Al-Qassim, Hail and Al-Jouf. Accordingly, this will improve the Kingdoms rail network while providing effective travel and mobility solutions for the residents of Zulfi. Importantly, the improved infrastructure will boost connectivity and contribute to making the Riyadh region a global economic and tourism centre. Furthermore, it will provide transport options for major events including the Asian Cup 2027, Expo 2030 and World Cup 2034.
Riyadh Metro Welcomes One Millionth Passenger Since Opening
Demonstrating the ongoing success of the Riyadh Metro, the company recently welcomed its 100 millionth passenger since opening. The number of blue line users reached 46.5 million, followed by the red line with 17 million passengers. Further figures indicate the orange line recorded ridership of 12 million, while the other three lines reached 24.5 million passengers.
