Qatar emerged as the regional leader in tourism growth, recording the highest increase in visitor room nights across the GCC. As part of its strategy to sustain this momentum, the country is currently developing a series of beachfront developments. Accordingly, such expansion will enhance the States appeal as a premium leisure destination while reinforcing its focus on quality, extended stays and economic impact.
Qatar Tourism Targeting Extended Duration of Stay
The topic was recently discussed during the Qatar Economic Forum, where it was revealed that Qatar is shifting its tourism strategy to focus on high-impact metrics and longer visitor stays. Figures show that in 2024, the five million visitor mark was achieved, showing a 25% increase compared to 2023. More importantly, the country exceeded 10 million room nights for the first time, providing a clearer picture of economic impact. As of now, Qatar has 40,000 hotel rooms, with another 7,000 in the pipeline. Notably, Qatar ranks first in the region for room night growth, recording 22% growth ahead of Dubai and Saudi Arabia. Importantly, the key focus is duration of visit with Qatar Tourism encouraging tourists to stay longer to appreciate the sun, sea, adventure and enjoy quality family time.
Qatar on Track To Achieve Tourism Strategy Targets
Further statistics reveal the tourism sector contributed QAR 55 billion (USD 15.11 billion) to gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024. Such figures demonstrate that the country is on track to achieve its Tourism Strategy 2030 target of 12% GDP contribution. Moreover, Qatar continues to leverage its world-class infrastructure by holding major global events. Notably, the State is hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the Arab Cup and Formula 1 later this year. In addition, a new medical tourism strategy backed by the Ministry of Public Health aims to attract visitors to world class healthcare services. The country is launching the QAR 20 billion (USD 5.49 billion) Simaisma project featuring a theme park, golf course, retail and beachfront accommodation.
