Oman`s Environment Authority Signs Eco-Tourism Contracts

Oman`s Environment Authority (EA) recently signed several agreements to develop and manage seven nature reserves across the country. The contracts, worth OMR 44 million (USD 114.29 million), will promote sustainable tourism while simultaneously protecting the Sultanate’s natural heritage.

Management, Operational, Developmental and Investment Deals

Four pacts were signed with the government owned Omran Group. As a result, they will manage and operate Ras al Shajar Nature Reserve, Turtle Reserve – South Sharqiyah, Arabian Oryx Sanctuary and Wetland Nature Reserve – Al Wusta. In addition, two arrangements cover the development of Laja Shlion – Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve and the Itlalat Hayur area in Mirbat. Similarly, investment contracts for the Stars Park Project in Al Hajar Al Gharbi and Khor al Mughsail Nature Reserve in Dhofar were inked.

Sustainable Plans Target Eco-Tourism and Will Protect Habitats

Notably, the agreements were signed during an official ceremony at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. Officials explained the projects will support tourism, protect ecosystems and promote sustainable development. Accordingly, plans will include eco-tourism resorts, star gazing parks, eco-lodges, camps, visitor centres, safaris, walking trails and turtle ponds. Furthermore, the Ministry aims to raise awareness among visitors, promote conservation education and encourage local communities to participate in eco-tourism. It also seeks to diversify sources of income, improve infrastructure and enhance the Sultanate’s tourism offerings.

National Park Strategic Projects Aligned With Oman Vision 2040

The seven chosen nature reserves cover approximately 5,660 square kilometres. Importantly, the strategic investment projects were selected in alignment with the Oman Vision 2040 priorities and based on specific environmental and operational standards. These include environmental impact assessments, sustainable tourism practices and the use of eco-friendly materials. Currently, the Sultanate of Oman has 31 officially declared nature reserves spread across the country`s various governorates. Such wildlife parks play a vital role in protecting biodiversity and endangered species.
