Saudi Arabia`s Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Programme (Saudi Reef) recently provided progress updates on its five Arabica coffee development projects. The schemes total value exceeds SAR 111 million (USD 29.6 million) and sites are located in Jazan, Aseer and Al-Baha.
Saudi Reef Developments Will Be Handed Over This Year
Saudi Reef said the projects are scheduled for completion and handover before the end of this year. They include establishing coffee processing and preparation factories, model nurseries and alternative coffee farms. Saudi Reef`s goal is to develop Arabica coffee cultivation and expand output using sustainable agricultural practices and modern farming technologies. The Kingdom currently produces over 1,800 tonnes of Arabica coffee annually, with output expected to rise further as new facilities become operational.
Initiatives Will Support Farmers And Create Rural Opportunities
There are three initiatives in Jazan, including a coffee processing factory in Al-Dayer Governorate, alongside two factories in Aseer and Al-Baha. Project completion has reached 100% for alternative model farms in Jazan and 49% for the coffee processing factory in Al-Baha. Progress on the model coffee nurseries in Jazan, Aseer and Al-Baha is currently 82%.
Saudi Reef emphasised that the new developments will support farmers incomes and improve product quality by implementing cutting edge technologies. Additional objectives include expanding high-quality seedling production, improving productivity and creating new economic opportunities in rural communities. The plan aims to utilise harvested rainwater to irrigate coffee seedlings on mountain agricultural terraces in Jazan.
