Kazakhstan`s flag carrier Air Astana recently launched a new triple weekly service from the Republics largest city Almaty to Shanghai. The new route is the airlines sixth destination in China and expands its overall footprint in the PRC. The new service complements the airline’s existing services to Beijing, Guangzhou, Sanya, Urumqi and Yining and is expected to increase business set up Kazakhstan.
32 Weekly Flights Link Kazakhstan And China
Following the addition of the Shanghai route, Air Astana Group now operates 32 weekly services between Kazakhstan and China. The expansion follows a period of rapid growth for the airline in the Chinese market. Since 2025, the group has transported over 250,000 passengers between the countries, a 96% increase compared on the previous year.
Increasing Ties Expected To Increase Business Set Up In Kazakhstan
The launch of the Shanghai service is an important milestone in Air Astana`s network and reflects the growing strength of ties between Kazakhstan and China. Accordingly the new addition of the Shanghai route will provide additional opportunities ultimately requiring business set up in Kazakhstan. Importantly, the airline forecasts strong and increasing demand across both business and leisure segments supported by visa-free travel. The Shanghai route will further enhance connectivity for transit passengers travelling onwards across the broader Air Astana network.
Air Astana was established as Kazakhstan’s national airline in 2001 by two founding shareholders – the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and BAE Systems PLC. It currently operates a fleet of 61 aircraft to cover over 56 domestic and international routes. In May 2019 the airline successfully launched FlyArystan marking the region’s first truly low-cost carrier demonstrating adaptability and innovation.
