Qatar`s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has launched the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025-30. It forms part of Qatar’s efforts to protect its natural resources in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-30.
Strategy Confirms Qatar`s Commitment To Protecting The Environment
The initiative aims to establish a comprehensive national framework to combat desertification and achieve land degradation neutrality. It intends to achieve this objective by improving the efficiency of natural resource management and strengthening supportive legislation and policies. As a result, the strategy will contribute to the protection of ecosystems and promote ongoing sustainable development. Importantly, it reflects Qatar’s commitment to protecting the environment by honouring the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Featuring advanced scientific and technical foundations, the framework aims to enhance the State’s capacity to address drought and desertification. Further goals aim to protect vegetation cover and ensure biodiversity sustainability in alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 – Life on Land. The strategy will also see the ministry collaborate in partnership with national and international entities, as well as local communities.
Nurseries To Be Established To Safeguard Local Flora
Importantly, the MoECC has co-ordinated its efforts with the UNCCD and relevant stakeholders in the public and private sectors. It includes practical programmes and projects, most notably the rehabilitation of terrestrial environments and the cultivation of native plant species. Additionally, it forms the establishment of nurseries to propagate local species while updating legislation governing the use of natural resources. Moreover, it represents a comprehensive framework that promotes ecosystem protection in addition to strengthening sound management of natural resources. Importantly, it focuses on raising environmental awareness across society and promoting scientific research and innovation in sustainable land management. Further legislation by Qatar`s Wildlife Development Department continues to implement national programmes to combat desertification by using integrated policies. These include rehabilitating rangelands and cultivating native plant species by expanding national nurseries to propagate and preserve local flora.
