Geologists have added 54 Kazakhstan mineral deposits to the State Register resource base across 2024 and 2025. Accordingly, the Republic is focusing on lithium, tungsten and rare earth elements as demand grows alongside clean-energy and high-tech manufacturing.
Kazakhstan`s State Register Is Official Inventory Of Minerals
The State Register is the official inventory of Kazakhstan mineral deposits, recording their resources and number of reserves. In addition it details the level of exploration and development and notes any changes resulting from extraction or reassessment. The register had 35 initial deposits added in 2024 followed by another 19 a year later. Over the same period, exploration and reassessments added 262.2 million tonnes of iron ore and 199 million tonnes of oil. Further additions include 157.2 tonnes of gold and 22 billion cubic metres of gas. The recorded resource base also increased for silver, copper, zinc, lead, chromium ore, manganese and phosphorite. It now includes around 10,000 Kazakhstan mineral deposits.
Resources Sector To Expand By Utilising Kazakhstan Mineral Deposits
To expand the resources sector, Kazakhstan is assessing potential for lithium, tungsten, molybdenum and other rare metals. A dedicated exploration programme focuses on rare earth elements, used in permanent magnets, electric motors/electronics, wind turbines and defence technologies. Studies have been completed at 11 exploration sites, while four prospective areas within Kuyrektykol have estimated resources at 935,400 tonnes. The government identifies Kuyrektykol in the Karaganda Region as the most promising of these sites. Geologists have identified lanthanum, cerium, neodymium and yttrium there. In 2025, officials said the wider Zhana Kazakhstan area could contain over 20 million tonnes of rare earth metals at depths of upto 300 meters.
Astana is forecasting increased growth in the sector from America and the European Union for its Kazakhstan mineral deposits. Over the next three years, Kazakhstan plans to invest over USD 470 million in state-funded geological exploration.
