Saudi Arabia and Qatar recently signed an agreement to construct a high-speed railway project under the Saudi-Qatari Coordination Council summit.
High Speed Train To Connect Riyadh And Doha Within Six Years
The 785 kilometre line will connect the capitals Riyadh and Doha, with key stations in Hofuf and Dammam. In addition, it will link King Salman International Airport in Saudi Arabia with Hamad International Airport in Qatar. The trains will operate at speeds exceeding 300 kilometres per hour, reducing travel between both capitals to two hours. To be completed within six years it is expected to create economic impact of SAR 115 billion (USD 30.7 billion). Accordingly, it will serve over 10 million passengers annually and create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs. The project will expand Saudi Arabia`s existing railway network and complement the 450-km long Haramain high-speed electric railway.
Trade Figures Released As Cooperation Extended In Select Sectors
During the summit, officials highlighted strong economic ties, noting that bilateral trade reached SAR 3.49 billion (USD 930.3) million in 2024. In addition, several agreements and memorandums of understanding were also signed. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the strategic defence partnership to support regional and international security. Moreover, cooperation in all security fields was extensively discussed, including information sharing, border security, cyber defence, counter terrorism and drug control. In addition, both countries agreed to expand cooperation in digital economy and innovation, industry, mining, youth, sports and culture. Further areas included education and joint academic programmes, media production and content reliability, cybersecurity and health.
