Qatar was listed among the most attractive countries for investment in the electricity and energy sector according to Fitch Ratings. Based on their assessment of 14 Arab countries, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman topped the rankings. They were followed by Morocco, Egypt and Algeria respectively.
Arab Energy Sector Attracting Substantial Foreign Direct Investment
Electricity consumption in Arab countries is forecast to increase by 3.5% to 1,296 terawatt/hours by the end of 2025. In addition, generated electricity is projected to exceed 1,754 terawatt-hours by 2030. The Arab energy sector attracted 360 foreign direct investment (FDI) projects worth over QAR 1.28 trillion (USD 351 billion). Moreover it provided over 83,000 jobs from January 2003 to December 2024 according to the Arab Investment and Export Credit Guarantee Corporation. It further noted that Arab foreign trade in power generation equipment and electric current increased by 8% to approximately QAR 142.69 billion (USD 39. 2 billion) in 2024.
Arab Countries Exporting QAR 27.66B Of Power Generation Equipment
Accordingly, five countries – Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Iraq accounted for 81% of the total. This sees an increase in power generation equipment and electric current exports of Arab countries worth QAR 27.66 billion (USD 7.6 billion). As a result, imports increased by 7.8% to more than QAR 114.66 billion (USD 31.5 billion) in 2024.
The Arab Investment and Export Credit Guarantee Corporation report is based on four key pillars. These include Arab production capacities and consumption until 2030 and foreign trade in power and energy generation equipment for 2024. The remaining two include foreign investments in the renewable energy sector and assessment of the sector’s investment and business risks.
