Oman recently unveiled three major investment opportunities in the semiconductor industry valued at around OMR 1.98 billion (USD 5.16 billion). The sector has rapidly progressed, attracting over OMR 50.20 million (USD 130million) in foreign investment while advancing national capabilities.
Scheme Will Support Sultanate`s Goal Of Attracting Investment
The scheme was unveiled by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology during the Muscat International Semiconductor Executive Summit. Accordingly, it will support Oman’s goal of attracting major investments across the semiconductor value chain.
The first opportunity requires creation of a Semi conductor Design Company in Muscat, with an investment value of OMR 11.54 million (USD 30 million). Accordingly, it seeks private investors to start and operate an integrated circuit (IC) design company capable of serving international markets. It is estimated tocreate 30-100 jobs. The second opportunity targets the Middle East’s first Outsource Semi conductors Assembly & Testing (OSAT) factory in Oman with an investment worth OMR 50.03 million (USD 130). The project is expected to create 300 jobs. Furthermore investors will receive free land up to 100,000 square metres and strong incentives under a potential government–private partnership. Finally, the third opportunity is a Semiconductor Raw Material Silicon Manufacturing plant in Muscat, with an estimated value of OMR 1.92 billion (USD 5 billion). The joint investment aims to establish a semiconductor-grade silicon manufacturing plant, supplying global raw-material demand for chip-making.
Importantly, officials emphasised that Oman’s incentives are designed to reduce entry barriers for semiconductor investors. These range from free land allocation, customs exemptions and 100% foreign ownership in free zones, to long-term tax incentives.
