Qatar small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have emerged as a powerhouse of the country’s economic diversification drive. Currently, they contribute between 15% and 17% of non-oil GDP and are consistently posting annual growth of 6%.
Qatar Ranked Top Ten On Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Rankings
These steady results have placed Qatar among the top 10 economies in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) rankings since 2021. SMEs now represent 97% of all private sector companies and establishments in the State, as estimated numbers reach 71,000. According to a Qatar TV report, the sector’s strong showing has been buoyed by increased government financing channels targeting smaller firms. Furthermore, the focus on adopting, enabling and accelerating a digital transformation has also contributed to the growth of Qatar small and medium enterprises.
Central the improvement is the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3) for 2024-2030, launched in January 2024. Its focus remains on setting ambitious targets to deepen and sustain the country’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. The strategy aims to increase SME`s GDP contribution and ensure 70% of venture capital is supplied through the private sector. It also aims to allocate around 0.1% of total GDP to financing Qatar small and medium enterprises.
Qatar Government Introducing Measures To Sustain Performance
In order to preserve this momentum, Qatar is introducing new measures aimed at sustaining the sectors high performance. These include programmes to accelerate SME`s digital transformation, updated regulations governing alternative finance and a review of public-private partnership frameworks. Further financing initiatives incorporate improved access to capital markets and an expansion of bank credit.
Qatar Development Bank has been instrumental in supporting and encouraging Qatar small and medium enterprises using distinctive and innovative financing solutions.
